as hardcover versions.

eBooks have been all the rage the world over with major retailers such
as Amazon stating it has been consistently selling more ebooks than the corresponding
hardcover versions.
Update: Just got word from Lewis» publisher that the ebook
version (including Kindle) will be available the same day
as the
hardcover.
On Mike Shatzkin's blog, he speculated that the publishers» decision to delay the e-book
versions of some major upcoming titles isn't «a battle to rescue
hardcover books from price perception issues caused by inexpensive ebooks» so much
as it is about «wresting control of their ebook destinies back from Amazon.»
E-books would also be released around the same day
as their
hardcover print counterparts, instead of waiting days, weeks, months after the
hardcover releases before releasing the e-book
version.
Publishers fought and won the ability to raise eBook prices, sometimes charging
as much for digital copies
as hardcover print
versions.
Barnes & Noble's press release explains how the package will work: the company's «state - of - the art cashiering system will allow retail customers to seamlessly combine a Nook Book purchase with the purchase of the new
hardcover title in - store, and leave with the authorization codes to download their digital purchase,
as well
as the digital
version of the free, exclusive novella on any of their Nook devices.»
This October, ABA member bookstores will be able to offer customers who purchase a
hardcover copy of the new Hillary Jordan title, When She Woke, a free e-book
version as well, thanks to a special promotion from Algonquin Books.
If you want a unique one that designates you
as the publisher, you will need to purchase an ISBN number separately, and you will need one for each
version of your book: eBook, paperback,
hardcover, audio, etc..
Companies like Amazon with its Kindle are doing the same thing
as what publishers are doing with the
hardcover version of their book.
Mr. Turvey said that Google would probably allow publishers to charge consumers the same price for digital editions
as they do for new
hardcover versions.
If you release a
hardcover version as well, then you would need to get a third ISBN.
Just
as you would need a separate ISBN for a paperback
version of the book and a
hardcover version of the book, so too will you need a separate ISBN for an ebook.
Well, even if you claim your books to Author Central, you may have multiple
versions or what they refer to
as editions: Kindle, paperback,
hardcover, audio, etc..
In my case, it becomes a double sore point because I bought both the
hardcover version (where the illustrations are readable) and the ebook
version as I noted in The Lure of eBooks: Gotcha!.
Luckily for them both, the $ 8 - 10 Paperback is actually competitively priced vis - a-vis e-books with the value add of being a tangible, physical good, and with a little effort I suspect that the $ 12 - 20 TPB could easily supplant the
Hardcover as the «lead»
version of paper books.
This isn't the same
as paperback
versions vs
hardcover — where the platform and convenience are the same — the timing and pricing are the key ingredients.
If I did get another set, it would probably be the Hufflepuff colors set, or the Ravenclaw set... but I already have the
hardcovers with the Mary GrandPré jackets, and I'm buying the Jim Kay illustrated
versions as they become available, and that's probably enough shelf space to dedicate to them.
If the trade was aghast at Amazon's institution of $ 9.99
as a viable price for the ebook
version of a
hardcover hit, it's tempting to mutter «all is forgiven» now.
There was not a lot of turnover a the top of the list this month
as Abnormal Returns readers take advantage of some special deals on Kindle
versions of some popular books and deeply discounted
hardcover copies of the Abnormal Returns book.
It came out originally in
hardcover, followed by a paperback
version last year, and, per my publisher, will soon be available
as an audiobook.
