The range of orientations that lead to transits falls off
as orbital distances grow: Small changes in the angle of the planet's orbit become large changes in the apparent position of the planet and star, precluding a transit.
Since a 2005 visit by NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft, the short - period comet has completed more than one complete orbit around the Sun and approached the inner Solar System as close
as the orbital distance of Mars.

The analysis of the
orbital evolution of the meteorite has showed, according to researchers, a «disturbing similarity» with the evolution of 2014 UR116 which, given its size and minimum
distance of intersection with the orbit of the Earth, has been classified
as a potentially dangerous asteroid.
The group defined a plutoid
as an object orbiting the sun at an average
distance greater than Neptune's, massive enough to assume a nearly spherical shape (
as planets do) but not massive enough to clear its
orbital path of other bodies (
as planets also do).
Their models showed that if you visited any star with a planet orbiting from the same
distance as Earth down to one tenth that, there is about a 38 percent chance (and likely less) that you would run into a planet and moon system similar to Jupiter's four Galilean satellites (Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto), with similar ratios of moon to planetary diameters and
orbital to planetary radii.
Davis & Wheatley (2009) present evidence of this limit that can be described
as a line in the versus a-2 plane (with a being the
orbital distance).
Viewed from a planet at Earth's
orbital distance around Alpha Centauri A, stellar companion B would provide more light than the full Moon does on Earth
as its brightest night sky object, but the additional light at a
distance greater than Saturn's
orbital distance in the Solar System would not be significant for the growth of Earth - type life.
This chart shows, on the top row, artist concepts of the seven planets of TRAPPIST - 1 with their
orbital periods,
distances from their star, radii and masses
as compared to those of Earth.
The orbit of an Earth - like planet (with liquid water) around close - orbiting Stars A and B may be centered
as close
as 1.06 AU — between the
orbital distances of Earth and Mars in the Solar System — with an
orbital period of over 384 days (1.05 years).
As an example, Mars orbits the Sun at a mean orbital distance of 1.52 AU and thus can be observed as close as ~ 0.5 AU from the Eart

NASA's Kepler spacecraft has found planet pairs on very similar orbits — with
orbital distances differing by
as little
as 10 percent.
Sirius A and B form a close binary separated «on average» by only about 19.8 AUs of an
orbital semi-major axis — which is about the same
as the
distance between Uranus and our Sun («Sol»).
The orbit of an Earth - like planet (with liquid water) around Star A may be centered
as close
as 1.8 AU — between the
orbital distances of Mars and the Main Asteroid Belt in the Solar System — with an
orbital period of 2.2 years.
The orbit of an Earth - like planet (with liquid water) around Star B may be centered
as close
as 0.09 AU — well within the orbit
distance of Mercury — with an
orbital period of just around 22 days.
Since planets cool rapidly
as they age, GPI is most sensitive to young, hot planets at large
orbital distances.
We know from hot Jupiters that Jupiter - like planets can change their
orbital distance over time, so there is no guarantee that the
orbital distances we are observing now are the same
as when the planet formed.
As suggested previously, however, the variation of stellar radiation over time and planetary orbital distance are as critical to the development of Earth - type planets as their mas

We love the beautifully engraved details, which include planet names and
distances from the sun
as well
as orbital periods and asteroids.
