Each year, people in America consume 13.8 billion gallons of sports drinks, soda, sweet tea, fruit punch as well
as other sweetened drinks, a mass intake of sugar that's fueling increasing diabetes and obesity rates in the U. S.

The lower levels of baseline sugar
sweetened drink consumption in the UK compared with the US may in part explain why the effect on obesity that we estimate in the UK is much less than that estimated in the US.12 The differences with respect to
other modelling studies may also be partly explained by their use of higher own price elasticity values for sugar

as the relation between energy balance and change in body mass index in children who are growing is different from that in adults.

other authors have voiced concerns about consumption of artificial sweeteners, because they may promote an appetite for sweet things, they harm bone and dental health, and their long term safety profile is not precisely clear.55 However, the European Food Safety Agency recently concluded that aspartame, the most common artificial sweetener, is safe at present consumption levels.56 The shift to milk consumption
as sugar
sweetened drink consumption falls might be expected.
RCTs showed that these beverages increased body weight, 114 and cohort studies pointed to an association with diabetes.115, 116 These results can also be applied to
other beverages such
as fruit juice and
sweetened dairy
drinks.
Less commonly consumed foods included
other beverages such
as tea, coffee, sugar -
sweetened drinks, formula milk, breast milk, milk - based desserts, commercial infant foods, and egg and egg - based dishes (Table 2).

as exercise or an advertising ban, and would also generate significant revenue for additional obesity prevention activities, say researchers writing in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
But if a lot of sugar floods the body all at once, such
as when downing a soda or
other sweetened drink, blood levels of insulin may spike.
It's extremely easy to consume high amounts of fructose on a daily basis, especially if most of your foods are processed in any way, or if you
drink sodas or any
other sweetened beverages such
as ice - teas, fruit juices and sports
drinks.
Bray also discusses the fact that
sweetened beverages in general,
as compared to sweeteners added to solid foods, have a greater tendency to cause weight gain, citing a randomized, double - blind European study by Rabin and
others, which found that
drinking calorically
sweetened beverages resulted in greater weight gain over the ten - week study than did
drinking diet
drinks.8 Since the beverages in this study were
sweetened with sucrose, Bray called for a second randomized controlled study to compare sucrose - and HFCS -
sweetened beverages.
