Feline aortic thromboembolism (also known
as a saddle thrombus) is a very serious condition in which a blood clot becomes lodged in the arteries that supply blood to the back legs.

saddle, and it is common for the blood clot to come to rest at the top of that point, leading to the term
saddle thrombus.
Other conditions such
as hypertension or degenerative kidney disease may also predispose cats to the development of
saddle thrombus.
For example, cats with certain types of heart conditions are at increased risk of suffering from a severe, rapid - onset, and painful condition known
as «
saddle thrombus» (more correctly called «Aortic Thromboembolism,» or ATE).
In addition, pets with sudden heart disease often generate blood clots (thromboembolisms,
saddle thrombi in cats) that deprive muscles throughout the body of oxygen, probably liberating additional CK from that source
as well.
