Some may confuse what Cianfrance is doing
as schmaltz but his exaggerated melodrama is grounded in a very real sense of the human experience.

When you see the dead wife's gorilla friend or her dog try to bond with Grace
as if they sense her presence, it will probably have you hurling chunks in your popcorn bucket at such nauseating syrupy
schmaltz that what should be touching ends up quite laughable.
Then, just
as you begin to cheer on this pile of claptrap, Levy ramps up the
schmaltz and loses it.
The combination should really make for histrionic
schmaltz, but Bouchareb works the same gentle, character - oriented groove
as last year's «The Visitor.»
Intended
as a showpiece for the then - new technology, the film plays Hemingway's much - loved story very safe; it borders on

schmaltz that's tonally closer to Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Say, by reversing the class to which each side belongs, but
as a feel - good flick about smart people learning lessons, it rises above the usual
schmaltz.
Sadly, her considerable talent is wasted, and unfortunately for all concerned, just
as the marriage it portrays, «The Story of Us» comes up
as empty
as the calories in the
schmaltz it so closely resembles.
Bill Murray brought a double dose of
schmaltz as he belted out the hits of the day, including the «Star Wars» theme
as you'd never heard it before.
It isn't
schmaltzed up enough to make a middle - aged driver feel
as if he's pretending to be a teen - ager.
But it's also full of humor, and it serves
as a nice diversion from all the holiday
schmaltz.
