A good place to start preventing and managing stress in
schools is to: • accept that work - related stress might be a problem for employees • understand what work - related stress is
as well
as the relationship between work and home stress • listen to employees and take action on findings • set expectations with
staff so they understand what can and can not be done for them • make time to tackle stress properly — try using the HSE's stress management tool (available from www.hse.gov.uk/stressstandards/) • ensure
staff are aware of available
support should they experience work - related stress (e.g. teacher
support network: www.teachersupport.info).
A survey conducted by the charity found that teachers and other
school staff see the limited capacity of existing Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services
as a major barrier to getting children the
support they need.
Over half (51 per cent) say
staff numbers at their
school have decreased in the last two years, with nearly two - thirds (65 per cent) saying they are not able to give pupils
as much individual attention in lessons due to the loss of
support staff and a similar number (64 per cent) saying pupils are not always taught by a teacher trained for the subject or age range due to the loss of teaching

Initially there was some resistance
as staff were unfamiliar the concepts and skills required, but with
support and comprehensive lesson plans the DCP was implemented and is now taught across the
school K - 12.
In his blog The Elephant In The (
Staff) Room — Why We Need To Talk About Teacher Wellbeing (The Huffington Post, 14th March 2017), Nick Haisman - Smith, Chief Executive at Family Links and the Nurturing
Schools Network, makes the point that «it is impossible to
support the social and emotional health of young people, if we
as teachers do not attend to our own emotional health».
