«Scientists have worked hard to understand the really fast changes
in sea level, such
as storm surges, because they cause major damage, and the really slow changes because long - term
sea level rise will shape the coastlines of the
future,» said study co-author Josh Willis of JPL.
The findings have important implications
in terms of planning for
sea level rise,
as ever - growing coastal communities might have to plan for even higher ocean
levels in a warmer
future.
If we thus want to know whether Harvey is a «harbinger» for the
future of Houston, the attribution question addressing the overall likelihood of a hurricane like Harvey to occur, which includes many variables other than temperature and
sea level rise that interact, needs to be answered by carefully estimating the likelihood of such hurricanes developing
in a warming world
as well
as how much rain they bring.
Based on modeling well into the
future and with continued
sea -
level rise, «we see a pretty significant increase
in flood risk» even
as many of those storms may track further east of the coast than is common now.

as fast
as possible with little thought for the
future, politicians
in North Carolina have essentially told coastal planners not to take
future sea level rise into account, and some places would like to resist or adapt but lack the resources to do so.
Another Nobel laureate

If, that is, we want a good chance of avoiding the dismal
future that Bill Hare, an accomplished scientist and the godfather of Greenpeace's climate campaign, has so carefully warned us about: Unstable weather, routine heat waves, widespread drought, crop failure, and mass extinction,
rising sea levels, and,
in general, a markedly more hostile environment and a situation that our society,

Sea -
level rise is also driven by the expansion of water
as it gets warmer and
in January scientists suggested this factor had been significantly underestimated, adding further weight to concerns about
future rises.
Sea level rise has happened, and will happen
in the
future,
as a result of global warming, the report finds.
As mentioned
in pervious blogs, Surfrider chapters participate
in dune restoration projects
in order to help build more resilient coastlines that can better withstand
future sea level rise and extreme weather events tied to climate change.
A climate researcher for decades, he had long been
in the midst of political and scientific debates over global warming, tirelessly urging political leaders and the public to take action now to avoid disasters such
as rising sea levels in the
future.
[
As a caveat, it is of course reasonable to postulate the relative risk / rewards involved
in all feedbacks and warming / cooling knock - on effects for the
future, additional
sea -
level rise predicated on deep ocean warmth perhaps being one of them.
The El Nino Southern Oscillation is a natural —
as opposed to man - made -
future of the Pacific Ocean,
as areas of the Pacific periodically warm then cool every few years, causing significant
sea level rises and falls every few years
in step with the co-oscillations of the ocean and atmosphere.
«Dr. Jacob also has world - class expertise
in evaluating how
rising sea levels will impact our parks
as well
as existing and
future development along the Hudson.»
As I frequently discuss the lack of warming and the decreases
in the estimates of
future climate change, I'll focus here on new scientific findings concerning the potential for
future sea level rise, interspersing a little travelogue.

Leading scientists have issued urgent warnings that
future warming must be limited to no more than 1 ° C (1.8 ° F) above year 2000
levels,
in order to avoid triggering climate feedbacks leading to even greater warming, and therefore catastrophic impacts such
as 20 feet of
sea level rise and extinction of a third of the world's species.
As explained
in my previous post on this topic, the planet is committed to further heating and
sea level rise, irrespective of what choices we make now, or
in the immediate
future, to reduce carbon emissions.
While the IPCC projected a maximum 23 - inch
sea -
level rise before 2100
as a result of
rising temperatures, Gore's statement predicted a 20 - foot
rise in sea levels if the Greenland or West Antarctic ice sheets were to melt or collapse at an indefinite point
in the
future.
But this type of ice loss — known
as dynamic thinning — is so ill - understood and difficult to predict that the IPCC,
in their 2007 assessment report, threw up their hands and refused to guess how much it would contribute to
future sea level rise.
These are already revealing a worrisome
future in which
rising global temperatures will likely cause environmental changes such
as rising sea levels and stronger hurricanes, which could uproot communities and intensify competition for food and other resources.
