Firmware and app updates are a great way to stay one step ahead of hackers and can be incredibly powerful — a 2016 update by Apple helped prevent computers and iPhones from being accessed by hackers to use
as spy devices.
But arbitrary code vulnerabilities like Stagefright can, for example, turn on a phone's microphone to use
it as a spy device, even if the phone has no access to anything more sensitive than a public Twitter account.

Eventually, anyone using an Apple
device would be unable to tell whether they were using the real thing or a version that had been altered by officials to be used
as a
spy tool.

device manufacturers, the FBI has also helped extend secret surveillance across and throughout the U.S.. For a decade, police departments around the U.S. deployed cell - site simulators (also known
as IMSI - catchers or Stingrays) to
spy on local cell phone networks without public oversight.
Critics have raised concerns about the camera being used
as a
spying tool, probably because you can turn the
device on by twisting its lens, but the point of using it is to always have the camera watching things, ready to take video footage.
It's debatable whether collecting and transmitting your phone's location data and
device information — such
as phone number, serial number, SIM card ID and other uniquely identifying information — constitutes
