While plague cases in people and pets are minimal in the United States, the real toll of this disease is seen in wildlife, in which it is referred to
as sylvatic plague.

At present, human cases — estimated
as tens of thousands of cases per year — are in people who live in close proximity to the «
sylvatic cycle» in forests where monkeys are present.
Thus far, the DiPalma group has sequenced DNA from over 90 strains of domestic ferret
as well
as other wild species of ferret, including the Siberian Polecat, the closest relative to the Black - footed Ferret, which is also susceptible to
Sylvatic Plague.
While the new vaccine shows promise
as a possible way to help control
sylvatic plague, there remain many unanswered questions.
