On some neons its a battery temperature gauge but on my neon its the Intake Air gauge but failure of the intake air gauge would apprear
as a check engine light and since I do nt have a light it must be working.

The
check engine light doesn't stay on for no reason
as you say, it is an indicator of a fault within the
engine.

Engine oil doesn't expand
as much
as transmission fluid, so can be
checked hot or cold.
