Each front leg exhibits a single ear below the knee with two eardrums (also known
as tympanic membranes), which are backed by a narrow cylindrical tube (the acoustic trachea) running along the leg internally and opening out on the side of the insect's body.
Under a dissection microscope (OPMI pico, Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc., Dublin, CA), a small area of skin as well
as the tympanic membrane overlaying the middle ear cavity was removed using iridectomy scissors, followed by the removal of the columella, allowing visualization of the cochlea.
