If you have an Echo and you don't like the name Alexa, or you have someone else in the house with that name, you can choose Amazon or Echo
as the wake word.
Amazon never explained why it chose Alexa
as the wake word for the Echo despite already owning a product by the same name.
My colleague Owen Williams also notes that Alexa is a more relatable name than Echo, and that most people likely prefer her name
as the wake word than the icy alternative of «Hey, Amazon.»
If you don't want to use «Alexa»
as the wake word for your Echo, you can change it to either Amazon, Echo, or Computer.
By default, the Echo uses «Alexa»
as the wake word, meaning that you have to say that word in order to activate the Echo's microphone in order to speak a command.
That means Mycroft provides core software technology such
as wake word recognition and natural language processing.
They've recently introduced «Computer»
as a wake word in a nod to Star Trek, which seems infinitely inconvenient.)
If you have more than one Echo or Echo Dot, repeat these steps for each device
as wake words are set on an individual basis.
