The course, taught by Professor Deborah Jewell - Sherman, provides an opportunity for students to combine action and reflection, challenge
their assumptions about leadership and improvement, and integrate and deepen their learning across the Ed.L.D.

Even well - meaning teachers can fail to assume the
leadership mantle in their programs by making the wrong
assumptions about their students, or striking the wrong balance.
The political argument for involving parents and other community members more substantially carries along with it an explicit challenge to the traditional, hierarchical
leadership and power structures in schools.156 According to Leithwood and Prestine (2002), the policies and reforms that call for decentralized decision making rest on certain important

Specifically, we look at the challenges faced by Black inservice and pre-service teachers (e.g. lack of support; financial challenges;
assumptions about interests / skills; push to
leadership) and develop innovative programming to address those challenges.
Women have all the burdens that men face plus additional obstacles and challenges that befall only women: disproportionate family obligations, exclusion from business and
leadership opportunities, and gender stereotyping that creates negative
assumptions about their competence and commitment.
