Deadpool 2 repeats the first movie's jokes about the character being a scrappy castoff not good enough for Marvel's higher - profile franchises —
at one point, Wade opens the wrong door in Charles Xavier's manor and finds the better - known characters staring back
at him in confused irritation — this one has the budget and the clout to allow him to associate with a higher class of co-star.

at least the filmmakers, actually think someone might find all the carnage and balls jokes shocking.
The movie's most sublime sequence has
Deadpool putting together a superhero team of his own, a quick - cut job - interview montage that allows Zazie Beetz's Domino, Terry Crews» Bedlam, Bill Skarsgård's Zeitgeist, and Lewis Tan's Shatterstar to cycle through in short order, along with Rob Delaney's Peter — a nonsuperpowered fellow who just liked the sound of the want ad — and the Vanisher, whose invisibility powers prevent him from needing to be played by anyone
at all.
Deadpool might make a joke about climaxes
at this point, but let's keep things clean.
Surprisingly limiting itself to a single passing prison - rape joke, the screenplay (written by Reynolds himself, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick) starts to fill in the outlines of an actual moral arc here, as Randall looks to
Deadpool as a surrogate father figure, while
Deadpool rebuffs every opportunity to play the protector —
at least until the arrival of Cable (Josh Brolin, finally giving this franchise an iron - sphinctered straight man), a bio-enhanced super-soldier from the future, who smashes his way into the Ice Box intent on killing Randall.
The box office payoff, however, was staggering, meaning that the key dilemma facing «
Deadpool 2» is how to reconcile the financial imperative to stay
at the forefront of the comic movie wave with the creative need to remain just outside it, pointing and giggling.
Reynolds repeats the original «
Deadpool» dynamic of giving the movie
at least five times what it gives him in return, turning neediness, self - pity, desperation and narcissism into different kinds of comic fuel.
This kind of humor can not really be found outside this niche superhero format, and despite there being a» 2»
at the end of it, this
Deadpool only improves on its first outing.
The jokes are of the hit - and - miss variety, which is to be expected, especially since the gimmick basically amounts to

There are two mid-credits scenes (with nothing
at the very end) and the second of these may be the most hilarious thing either
Deadpool movie has done.
There's little that's genuinely daring or subversive in
Deadpool 2 (A mid-credit sequence
at the end is an inspired exception, but well, the movie's already finished by that point).
After the first
Deadpool enthusiastically flipped the bird (and hung a moon, and performed a number of other obscene gestures)
at the comic - book - hero film genre, what could the creators of the follow - up do for an encore?
