at the breast allows the natural process to happen and your
body is more responsive to baby than a
pump which is essentially tricking your
body into thinking it is a baby.
Being able to double
pump (
pump from both breasts
at once) obviously saves you time, and it also is more effective
at boosting milk supply due to the higher level of prolactin in your
body.
It is important that if someone else feeds baby
at a time when you would usually be nursing,
pump in order to ensure that your
body gets that expected stimulation to keep making milk.

I like when I teach moms about breast
pumps at my job I like to tell them skin to skin is usually where our
body is used to what our
body is expecting for milk output which is why the baby is a better
pump than an electric
pump.
If you don't regularly have baby
at the breast,
pump on a regular schedule so your
body gets the regular stimulation it needs to keep making milk.
If someone does feed baby your breastmilk be ssure to
pump or hand express
at those times so your
body does nt miss a feeding or stimulation.
If you normally feed your baby
at the breast while
at home, you can add in a few
pumping sessions in between feeding sessions to, again, signal your
body to make more milk.
Your baby's little mouth is much more efficient
at getting the milk out, and your
body responds differently to the baby than to the
pump.
Ideally, have baby
at the breast when you are together and if, for any reason, someone else feeds baby be sure to
pump or hand express so your
body does not limit your milk because of lack of stimulation.
If that happens,
pump for comfort and to help your
body adjust to your little one's new schedule
at night.
Because your
body will adjust your supply according to your nursing patterns, moms who aren't supplementing with bottled breast milk don't have to worry abut
pumping at work.

pump (or offer a bottle) before the 4 - 6 week mark as it is important for baby to establish your milk supply as they will nurse, remove milk and then your
body will replenish.
So, during the first few weeks, you should try your best to
pump at least every 2 to 3 hours - about 8 to 12 times each day - to stimulate your
body to produce a healthy milk supply.
However, it is important that baby is fed so if you are still having issues with latching definitely
pump at least every 2 hours to make sure your
body is producing milk.

body will get used to
pumping at the same time in the same place each day, and recognise that it's time to let the milk flow.
You could
pump a little when you are uncomfortably full but yes, you are correct; your

body several weeks to get used to using a breast
pump and you don't want to have to do this while you're getting back into the routine
at work.
If someone else feeds baby when you are there
pump during that time so your
body does not think it needs to make less milk because of a skipped feeding but try to keep baby
at the breast.
By sticking as closely as possible to these times each day, your
body will adjust and will learn to provide milk for the
pump at those times.
Other actions you can take to stimulate your
body and help increase your breast milk supply include breastfeeding more often, breastfeeding for a longer period of time
at each feeding, and using a breast
pump after or between breastfeedings.
I think it's fair to say that until I started
pumping, the interest I had in things that came out of my
body was sporadic
at best.

I was drinking OVER a gallon of water a day to help stimulate milk production, and attempting to
pump between feedings so my
body would realize that it needed to produce more, but I never got more than an ounce
at a time and that was rare.

At first you may not express much milk, but as your
body adjusts to
pumping you will be able to
pump more.
So, if you will be away from your babies always ensure to
pump both breasts so your
body knows milk is still needed
at that time.

body will adjust and will learn to provide milk for the
pump at those times.
Once your baby is about 4 weeks old you can start
pumping, as your
body is better
at regulating your milk supply.
Try to
pump at the same times each day if you can, it will help your
body regulate and prepare for a good letdown.
In the first few weeks back
at work,
pump at feeding times, as the adjustment away from baby will be enough for mom's
body to deal with.
Understand the tips & tricks to reduce your workload, like using a ziplock bag to store breast
pump parts in the fridge between
pump sessions
at work rather than cleaning each time, and try to set up a routine so your
body knows what to expect.
Maybe she has to return to work immediately and doesn't want to
pump during her break, maybe she is taking medications that prohibit breastfeeding, or maybe she just wants to be able to drink a glass of wine
at the end of a long day taking care of her baby and dodging judgmental assumptions from a society that thinks they know what she should do with her own
body.
As your
body gets used to the smaller amount of milk being
pumped out, and
at longer intervals, it will accommodate its production of milk accordingly.
So, we can only recommend to starting off
at about 15 minutes
pump session, but really test your own
body and your own
pump.
