It was the first wreck of its kind — two intact spacecraft accidentally plowing into each other
at hypervelocity — in the half - century that humans have been launching objects into space.

As the team report today in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and
at the U.K. National Astronomy Meeting in Hull, most of the known
hypervelocity stars have trajectories that would fit this scenario.
And because the LMC is orbiting the Milky Way
at nearly 400 kilometers per second, a star ejected from it could be moving faster than the 500 kilometers per second that makes it a
hypervelocity star in the Milky Way.
Through
hypervelocity impact experiments performed using the Vertical Gun Range
at the NASA Ames Research Center, Schultz was able to show that those grooves were likely formed by chunks of the impactor that sheared off on initial contact with the surface.
«The other
hypervelocity velocity stars discovered so far are all
at least consistent with coming from the galactic centre,» Portegies Zwart says.
This time, they replaced the carbon source with bicarbonate and conducted
hypervelocity impact experiments
at 1 km / s using a single stage propellant gun.
But a new study shows that most of the 20 or so
hypervelocity stars found so far might actually come from outside our own galaxy, in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small satellite galaxy orbiting the Milky Way
at nearly 400 kilometers per second.
hypervelocity An adjective for stars that move across space
at unusual speed — enough speed, in fact, that they can escape the gravitational hold of their parent galaxy.
Astronomers suspect that most
hypervelocity stars leave the Milky Way after a close brush with the supermassive black hole that sits
at the center of our galaxy.
This time, they replaced the carbon source with bicarbonate and conducted
hypervelocity impact experiments
at 1 km / s using a single stage propellant gun (Figure 2).

at length about Adam Warren's writing abilities, and how his work on Iron Man:
Hypervelocity with Brian Denham was a brutally effective way to do an Iron Man story.
