(As anyone who has been visiting MomsTEAM's Concussion Safety Center
for the past twelve years knows, science and technology have yet to come up with a way to prevent concussions; the most we can realistically hope to do
at this point is a better job of identifying concussions when they occur and managing them in such a way as to keep the recovery time to a minimum and to keep kids from returning before their brains have fully healed so as to minimize the
risk of serious, long - term effects, or even, in rare cases,
death).
For the normal baby bald spots due to tearing off the hair, try alternating the way your baby sleeps during naps and
at night (Just don't put your baby to sleep belly down, due to the
risk of sudden infant

When I finally had a chance to speak, we were already running over the 2 1/2 hours allotted
for the roundtable, so I was only able to briefly touch on two of my many message points: one, that the game can be and is being made safer, and two, that, based on my experience following a high school football team in Oklahoma this past season - which will be the subject of a MomsTEAM documentary to be released in early 2013 called The Smartest Team - I saw the use of hit sensors in football helmets as offering an exciting technological «end around» the problem of chronic under - reporting of concussions that continues to plague the sport and remains a major impediment, in my view, to keeping kids safe (the reasons: if an athlete is allowed to keep playing with a concussion, studies show that their recovery is likely to take longer, and they are
at increased
risk of long - term problems (e.g. early dementia, depression, more rapid aging of the brain, and in rare cases, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and in extremely rare instances, catastrophic injury or
death.)
When infants are not optimally breastfed they are
at risk for increased illness such as higher rates of gastrointestinal and respiratory infections, allergies, cancer, obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes and even
death.
In Oregon, there have been
at least 19 newborn
deaths reported to the state over the past decade
for a
death rate more than 4 times higher than low
risk hospital birth.
Most studies of homebirth in other countries have found no statistically significant differences in perinatal outcomes between home and hospital births
for women
at low
risk of complications.36, 37,39 However, a recent study in the United States showed poorer neonatal outcomes
for births occurring
at home or in birth centres.40 A meta - analysis in the same year demonstrated higher perinatal mortality associated with homebirth41 but has been strongly criticised on methodological grounds.5, 42 The Birthplace in England study, 43 the largest prospective cohort study on place of birth
for women
at low
risk of complications, analysed a composite outcome, which included stillbirth and early neonatal
death among other serious morbidity.
Researchers reported high overall perinatal mortality in a study of home birth in Australia, 35 qualifying that low
risk home births in Australia had good outcomes but that high
risk births gave rise to a high rate of avoidable
death at home.36 Two prospective studies in North America found positive outcomes
for home birth, 23 24 but the studies were not of sufficient size to provide relatively stable perinatal
death rates.
Because they still have poor head control and often experience flexion of the head while in a sitting position, infants younger than 1 month in sitting devices might be
at increased
risk of upper airway obstruction and oxygen desaturation.128, — , 132 In addition, there is increasing concern about injuries from falls resulting from car seats being placed on elevated surfaces.133, — , 137 An analysis of CPSC data revealed 15 suffocation
deaths between 1990 and 1997 resulting from car seats overturning after being placed on a bed, mattress, or couch.136 The CPSC also warns about the suffocation hazard to infants, particularly those who are younger than 4 months, who are carried in infant sling carriers.138 When infant slings are used
for carrying, it is important to ensure that the infant's head is up and above the fabric, the face is visible, and that the nose and mouth are clear of obstructions.
The
risk of
death in such circumstances should not be underestimated, particularly as the capacity to care
for severely asphyxiated babies
at home is limited.
Logically
at least 3 out of 4 of those
deaths occurred in women who were unsuitable
for homebirth or occurred after the first week, which would amount to a maximum of 1 in 10,000 preventable low
risk deaths in the first week after birth.
Even if we just take early and late neonatal stats, leaving out HALF of the homebirth
deaths (22/44) it's 1.29 / 1000
for MANA's almost all white, majority college educated, mostly singleton, mostly low -

Drugs used in active management have documented
risks for the mother, including
death, and we do not know the long - term effects of these drugs, which are given

«It is important
for health care professionals, staff in newborn nurseries and neonatal intensive care units, and child care providers to endorse the recommended ways to reduce the
risk of SIDS and other sleep - related
deaths, starting
at birth,» Dr. Moon said.
Some studies also suggest that they are
at lower
risk for sudden infant
death syndrome and serious chronic diseases later in life, including asthma, diabetes, leukemia and some forms of lymphoma, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
They are also
at greater
risk for rare but serious conditions such as severe lower respiratory infections, leukemia, necrotizing enterocolitis, and sudden infant
death syndrome (SIDS).5 Breastfeeding is also good
for moms, lowering the
risk for breast cancer, ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.6, 7
We restricted the denominator to live births
for all other outcomes, since only live - born neonates were
at risk for those outcomes (e.g., neonatal
death).
These include the infant with galactosemia, 53,54 the infant whose mother uses illegal drugs, 55 the infant whose mother has untreated active tuberculosis, and the infant in the United States whose mother has been infected with the human immunodeficiency virus.56, 57 In countries with populations
at increased
risk for other infectious diseases and nutritional deficiencies resulting in infant
death, the mortality
risks associated with not breastfeeding may outweigh the possible
risks of acquiring human immunodeficiency virus infection.58 Although most prescribed and over-the-counter medications are safe
for the breastfed infant, there are a few medications that mothers may need to take that may make it necessary to interrupt breastfeeding temporarily.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies should sleep in their parents» room — but not in the same bed —
for at least the first six months of life, ideally
for the whole year, to reduce the
risk of Sudden Infant
Death Syndrome (SIDS) by as much as 50 percent.
And some studies suggest co-sleeping puts babies
at higher
risk for SIDS (sudden infant
death syndrome), especially when parents drink too much, smoke or fail to make sure the bed is safe.
The authors say this study shows that breastfeeding reduced the
risk of sudden infant
death syndrome by around 50 %
at all ages throughout infancy and
for as long as the infant is breastfed.
Given the large number of children who were co-sleeping yet did not succumb to SIDS, the authors wondered whether co-sleeping alone had put children
at risk for sudden
death or a combination of behaviors.
Babies between 1 and 4 months old are most
at risk for sudden infant
death syndrome (SIDS), and 90 percent of cases occur in babies under the age of 6 months.
Though
at first these studies seemed to implicate co-sleeping as one
risk factor
for unexplained infant
death, the re-evaluation discovered a significant proportion of Maori Indians among the subjects of the studies.
Do NOT decline this shot as without vitamin K, your baby could be

death.
Childhood cancer is one of the leading causes of
death among children, and while the evidence is still limited, studies are showing that breastfeeding
for at least six months can reduce a child's
risk.
For instance, according to the Mayo Clinic, babies who co-sleep are
at risk of sudden infant
death syndrome (SIDS) because the soft surfaces may impair breathing.
The team also proposed that what causes an infant's vulnerability to colic may be the same as what makes an infant
at risk for sudden infant
death syndrome (SIDS).
For example, stopping breastfeeding
at an early age is a factor associated with increased
risk of diarrhoea, xerophthalmia and
death (4)(5).
After breastfeeding has been firmly established, usually
at 3 to 4 weeks of age, the AAP suggests offering a pacifier to infants
at routine sleep and nap times to help reduce the
risk for SIDS and other sleep - related infant
deaths.
So as you can see, Dr Tuteur does give the
death rate
for low
risk births
at home.
«According to the CDC Wonder database, the neonatal
death rate
for low
risk white women
at term from the years 2004 - 2009 is 0.38 / 1000.»
If you look
at the
death rate when high -
risk pregnancies falsely classified as low -
risk are included (midwives claim to only attend low -
risk births), you've gotten up to 2.0 per thousand
deaths and about 40 per thousand permanently injured
for a total of 42 per thousand dead or permanently injured.
