The

at the 1.78:1 HDTV aspect ratio, has a layer of soft, era - appropriate film grain throughout and is remarkably clean,
though it occasionally exhibits a mild degree of gate weave.
Suffice it to say the transfer is intermittently noisy and generally looks like it's been subjected to a light cocktail of grain - filtering and edge - enhancement,
though the anamorphic cinematography is naturally soft, with lens aberrations
at times throwing the upper third of the
image out of focus entirely.
The film opens with the subtle
image of Ahmad and Marie caught between a pane of glass
at an airport, unable to hear what they are saying even
though they can see each other.
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35 X 1
image is softer than a new film should be,
though I was expecting
at least some
image degradation from a Statham film.
The solid transfer retains the film's gritty, grainy look with an
image that will be familiar to those who viewed the film in theaters (
though at home a bit of digital sharpening is evident in residual edge enhancement).
Youth doesn't even have striking
images to impress with, its palette of visual ideas tipping its hat variously
at Condé Nast Traveler, the sort of fashion photography that thinks naked old people are edgy, and the high - budget pop video,
though it does have a vocabulary of bland truisms all of its own.
Allowing his name, persona, and «
image» (
though one of the movie's great running jokes is that nobody can quite remember who he is) to be utilized in this bizarre, absurdist fashion required a great leap of faith, especially since both Kaufman and director Spike Jonze were relative nobodies
at the time.
The
image is somewhat dark
at times
though.
While the character and the film take a wrongheaded turn, Depp's performance remains consistently strong
though he is also
at the mercy of some unconvincing age makeup (a point driven further home by the
image of the real - life Jung that closes the film).
Everything —
