attention, Florida Governor Rick Scott
on Thursday signed into law a measure that will end tenure for new public school teachers and base pay more directly
on student test scores.
State accountability systems focus
attention and resources
on low performance and remediation, but in many school districts across the country district leaders are as much concerned, if not more, about sustaining good performance and about establishing agendas for
student learning beyond proficiency
scores on standardized
tests.
It required schools to publish their
scores on state
tests not just as averages, but broken down by
students» race, sex and other groups, a rule that most educators agree has focused
attention on narrowing achievement gaps.
I also strongly believe that the PLCs should not be focused
on improving
test scores but rather
on improving the other parts of
student's education that do not receive as much
attention as
test skills and content.
Anyone who has been paying
attention to education matters the past few years has surely noticed the understandable uproar over the attempt to rate teachers based
on student standardized
test score «growth.»
For example, classroom concentration,
attention, and memory immediately increase after physical activity, and
student test scores correlate positively with regular participation.122 Research has also shown that elementary school
students that perform better in reading, mathematics, and science have higher physical fitness
test scores.123 In addition, children who perform below grade level academically and participate in a physical activity program are more likely to improve their performance
on standardized
tests than are their less active peers.124
Measuring Academic Performance: The Case for Focusing
on Grades Despite all the
attention to standardized
tests, a growing body of research shows that achievement
test scores are not strong predictors of whether
students will graduate from high school or college.
As a group, these largely Hispanic
students have persistently
scored significantly lower than their white peers
on standardized
tests like the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), known as the nation's report card, despite increased
attention to this «achievement gap.»
