Therefore, I would suggest that the most important reason for our clinging to the notion
of revelation is not to evoke a sense
of privilege but to give strong expression to our sense
of the always surprising initiative or «prevenience»
of God and the conviction that we are not ourselves the
authors of the promise we
live by.

So
by the
author's logic, if a person is single for whatever reason throughout adulthood - let's say a person has not met their
life partner or someone is severely disabled - then they will never know the highest level
of spiritual intimacy?
There may be no better term than «revelation» to accentuate faith's conviction that we ourselves are not the
authors of the promise we
live by.
One idea is that the elves represent something
of the contemplative, withdrawn as they are from the world,
living peacefully in hidden places like Rivendell, whose ambiance is described
by the
author with the love and awe
of a person who has experienced the depth
of retreat - like stillness.
The opening chapter
by Jason DeRouchie showed how the organization
of our modern English Bibles is not the same organization that Jesus would have known, and this opening chapter also showed that the constant and recurring themes
of the Old Testament
authors are also the constant and recurring themes in the
life and ministry

This would be an incredible claim to make today, but in an age when mythology was rife and factual accuracy was not exactly valued
by committed religious zealots, which the original
