DRM makes it hard for the
author to distribute copies for
review, and if the platform goes down at some
point in the future, all
of the
author's books will become unreadable.
Every indie
author comes to the
point in their career where they're going to have to secure book
reviews and from what I've observed, not many
of us are good at it.
It's not unlike the process I recommend to
authors or professionals when they are researching a self publishing company: Locate a number
of comparison or
review sites and allocate a
point system to come up with a combined value for all the firms you are researching.
Critical essay or book
review is what the name assumes - you need to write a critical
review of a book, to analyze the ideas, to discuss
points made by
author, to provide your own evaluation
of publication.
The purpose
of book
review writing is to communicate your own ideas and sensations about the book, its
points,
author's writing style, events described in the book, opinion about the characters, etc..
I'd just like to
point out that after dealing with an arrogant twit this morning, who demanded I
review his book and then go huffy about it, reading and
reviewing REAL
author Amie Gibbons was a breath
of fresh air.
She noted with another light laugh that some
authors who practically beg to have their book
reviewed will often focus in on the one negative she might
point out at the end
of a
review and give her a hard time for that, forgetting that having a generally positive
review is rare and valuable.
This may seem like a duh
point, but the vetting committee read samplings
of each
author and had to distinguish candidates based on critical
reviews of their work.
While I'm here, I would also like to
point out that traditionally published
authors are also not entirely above assholish behavior in the face
of negative
reviews.

of fiction and nonfiction book covers, and those posts are becoming an incredible resource for
authors, publishers and designers.
Samantha reports that she gets more requests for interviews and actually prefers them, since that gives the
author a better chance to describe the book's contents than a
review, which is often unpredictable in quality or
point of view.
