As a small press
author for a press I adore (Hadley Rille Books), the
promotion road is hard going, as I, and my books, are viewed as «less than» by other
authors, bookstores, and the publishing community
at large.
At this point, the big question that an
author will run into is: «How do I publicize my price

Hell's bells, if we have to make sure we send an edited manuscript to our agents and editors before they «edit» it — and yes, there are a number of
authors who pay freelance editors to go over their work before submitting it because they know there will be no real editing done by their editors
at certain legacy publishers — and we have to do our own marketing and
promotion and do it on our own dime, why are we giving legacy publishers the majority of money earned by our hard work?
Social networking has become an integral part of book
promotion, and the more frequently
authors» names turn up on the social networks, the happier they ought to be... unless they turn up in social networks in the wrong context,
at the wrong time.

The takeaway, for me, is that I will spell everything out to
authors at the start of book
promotion campaigns, and if I'm explaining too much, then I will wait for my clients to tell me so.
I've read lots of comments from lightly - selling
authors that they found — to their surprise — their indie - pubbed book carried in different indie bookstores, without any
promotion on their part
at all.
An invitation to speak
at a local library, a handout asking for
authors with interesting books and interesting stories to appear on either a regular or Internet radio show, teachers eager to bring their book into their school library, not to mention the opportunity to learn ever so much about book
promotion from the more seasoned
authors.
(Actually, the
authors who will really make money in this new world are those who can write fast or who have backlists they own and sell to both traditional publishers and have other projects up
at the same time to take advantage of this
promotion.)
Obviously, online book
promotion is
at least 50 percent of any
author, publisher, or book publicist's focus these days.
Some people think that
authors are spending too much time on social self -
promotion at the expense of honing their craft.
Just before Christmas last year, I saw a callout for a «summer
at Christmas»
promotion for indie
authors, with the aim of «promoting summer reads rather than Christmas reads for something a bit different».
The MFRW Friends of Romance Award is presented to companies seeking to aid
authors with
promotion at little or no cost, and to offer affordable programs.
I've also seen
authors requesting or expecting a narrator to share
at least half of the burden of
promotion and marketing, with the argument that since they have an equal portion in the profits, they should share an equal portion in the costs (financial, time, energy) of marketing.
With so many
authors going DIY, I'm seeing some equally squick - worthy attempts
at promotion.
