The families that follow
authoritative parenting model spend quality time with each other.
As society has departed from the strict, authoritarian parenting styles of the 1700s and moved towards
an authoritative parenting model, much more freedom in both parent and child behaviors is observed.
Developed by Diana Baumrind in 1966 at the University of California at Berkeley,
the authoritative parenting model has evolved over the years.

Instead of reacting with anger and telling her to go to her room and think about what she'd done (our normal
model), I stayed in my
authoritative parenting space and picked her up and took her to her room and asked her if she could spend time in her room to «cool down a little bit.
Make no mistake... radical unschoolers do
parent differently than the traditional,
authoritative model of
parenting that many people are used to seeing.
We have previously discussed the three
models proposed by D.Baumrind — authoritarian,
authoritative, and permissive — and the fourth
model added by researchers later on, uninvolved or neglectful
parenting.
Each scene provides an example of how an autocratic or permissive
parenting technique fails to handle a situation and then
models the alternative
authoritative (or «active») skills.
Diana Baumrind's (1967) widely - cited research relies on a two - factor
model of discipline to generate a typology, in which three ideal
parenting types — «
authoritative»; «authoritarian» and «permissive» — were generated by combining the extreme poles of a two - factor discipline
model.
Because
authoritative parents act as role
models and exhibit the same behaviors they expect from their children, kids are more likely to internalize these behaviors.
The
model below illustrates how both
authoritative and authoritarian
parenting are both high on control (demandingness) but also how
authoritative is thought to be only high on behavioral control whereas authoritarian
parenting is thought to be high on both behavioral and psychological control.

model can be categorized as a form of «
