Giving away free or selling inexpensive copies is not expected just because... it's a tactic for
getting exposure with the understanding that some of these copies will lead to
book reviews, which in turn helps
get more exposure and entree into certain marketing programs and options, and which helps prompt actual purchases as many readers are hesitant about buying a
book by an unknown, unreviewed
author.
I'm sure these
authors will develop a thick skin one way or the other should their
book get poorly
reviewed on Amazon or they don't generate the sales they expected (as do all
authors regardless of path to publication).

Many
authors get overwhelmed by the exact steps to take — when should you build an email list, how do you
get book reviews, what should you price your
book?
Honestly, it will always sting for a nanosecond when I read about
authors winning awards that I can't begin to hope to win as an indie, or heading off on
book tours, or
getting picked to speak at big events, or receiving glowing
reviews from notable publications, or hobnobbing with other big name
authors.
That number has been tossed around as a golden
review count for
authors to shoot for, and many
authors will go out of their way to buy, beg, borrow, cheat, and steal to

This * should * prevent a lot of bad
reviews that many

I tend to stick to
books I know I will probably have a chance of enjoying, since it isn't really fair to an
author to
get something you know you probably won't like, and then being proven correct and leaving a bad

When Josh and I were discussing our plans for the second Warpworld
