It even seems to get outperform the Note 8 in
auto brightness mode, which is surprising.
There's
no auto brightness mode here, but for those moments when you have to use it out in the sun, you can enable the «Outdoors» mode from the notification shade to further enhance brightness levels.
Photos and videos are eye pleasing, and outdoor viewing is better than average in
auto brightness mode.
One additional nit - pick though,
the auto brightness mode on our review units was significantly slower to respond to changes in lighting conditions than just about any other flagship phone we've reviewed.

Outdoor visibility remains a challenge in direct sunlight, as it does for all watches, although it has an
auto -
brightness mode (on by default) that goes some way to addressing the problem.
The Galaxy S9 generated a peak full - screen
brightness of 603 nits while in Adaptive
mode with
auto -
brightness turned on.
Pull down from the top of the phone with two fingers — or pull down twice with a single digit — and you get shortcuts to the

auto, even though it shows up and animates if you tap to focus in any of the other

The update brings along the expected power - saving Doze feature, revamped silent
mode, dynamic

brightness adjustment, new app permissions and settings as well as Direct Share.
There's an

brightness mode, although most of the time we were using the phone we kept it on full
brightness for maximum effect.

Mode — In the performance
mode, the features like data time out as well as the
auto brightness functions are turned off so that the battery is saved and the performance is not hindered by these features.
If you're familiar with power saving
modes on other phones, then you know this reduces the screen
brightness, limits the background activity of apps, disables email
auto - sync, and reduces sound and visual effects.
The Outdoor
mode (accessible from the notifications shade) helps in bright daylight, but Samsung really needs to understand that removing the
auto -
brightness feature is one of the last things it should do when looking at how it can reduce the price of a smartphone.
