of positive news about academic improvement in Arizona, following on the heels

students outperformed the state
average and went on to champion the notion that it is possible for poor
students of any color — even though they may be far below
grade level — to close the achievement gap in terms
of race and income.
Even though the school serves
students who are coming in, on
average, more than one
grade level behind, these
students were not conscious
of any academic barriers.
This year, charter
students once again scored higher than the state
average in virtually every
grade level and subject area on the state's AzMERIT test for the third straight year, according to results released by the Arizona Department
of Education on Sept. 6.
On a whole Denver elementary
students showed impressive improvement last year: the percent
of students meeting or exceeding
grade level expectations increased 4.7 points in English Language Arts and 2.3 points in math; on
average elementary
students scored better than 56 %
of their academic peers across the state in ELA and better than 54 %
of their peers in math.
Fewer than a third
of students are reading on
grade level, and the math proficiency rate among eighth - graders is less than half the city
average.
LGBTQ
students nationwide face higher
levels of depression and lower
levels of self - esteem, lower
grade point
averages, higher truancy rates and staggeringly high rates
of physical violence.
In one school district that appears to have beaten the odds, Union City, N.J.,
students consistently performed about a third
of a
grade level above the national
average on math and reading tests even though the median family income is just $ 37,000 and only 18 percent
of parents have a bachelor's degree.

of their pupils get five C
