babies, toddlers, and preschoolers don't just «figure out» how to
sleep well.
But studies in countries where there has been a switch from
babies sleeping predominantly on their stomachs to
sleeping mainly on their backs have not
found any evidence of increased risk of choking or other
problems.
And
problems aside, its
findings do not support the conclusion that
sleep trained
babies continue to experience distress.
The study
found that 9 month old kids had troubled
sleep as a result of parents arguing regularly and the
sleep problem could persist even when the
babies turned into 18 month olds.

Researchers
found in a recent study (Schieche et al. 2008) in the Journal of Zero to Three (Jan. 2009) that in a sample of 80
babies ages 6 - 18 months old whose parents completed the above method, 13 % of the
babies had a relapse of
sleep problems, 8 % did not respond at all, but 79 % of the
babies had continued success with being able to
sleep through the night and self soothe themselves upon wakening.
