So if you think of going
in [a]
warming direction of 2 degrees C compared to a cooling direction of 5 degrees C, one can say that we might be changing the Earth, you know, like 40 percent of the kind of change that went on between the Ice Age; and now are going
back in time and so a 2 - degree change, which is about 4 degrees F on a global average, is going to be very significant

Indeed, conventional wisdom held that higher levels of aerosol pollution
in the atmosphere should cool the earth's
climate because aerosols can increase cloudiness; they not only reduce precipitation, which raises the water content

in turn causes more
warming sunlight to be reflected
back into space.

It is actually the other way round: the increased warmth produces an increase
in CO2, which
in turn feeds
back into the
climate system and thus serves to amplify the initial
warming, just as interest, after the initial prodding of a loan, feeds
back into one's finances to amplify one's debt.

back as the 1950's, when instructional science filmmaking was

However, it is important to keep
in mind that we might easily more than double it if we really don't make much effort to cut
back (I think the current estimated reserves of fossil fuels would increase CO2 by a factor of like 5 or 10, which would mean a
warming of roughly 2 - 3 times the
climate sensitivity for doubling CO2 [because of the logarithmic dependence of the resulting
warming to CO2 levels]-RRB-... and CO2 levels may be able to fall short of doubling if we really make a very strong effort to reduce emissions.
All of the effects of global

in that balance.
With human carbon dioxide production accounting for less than 3 % of the earth's total natural carbon dioxide production it is ludicrous to think any small reduction we might make would be perceptible — Remember going

warmer than it is now) would result
in a less than 3 % reduction
in carbon dioxide production.
Steve McIntyre: «If you are not a
climate scientist (or a realclimate reader), you would almost certainly believe, from your own experience, that cities are
warmer than the surrounding countryside From that, itâ s easy to conclude that as cities become bigger and as towns become cities and villages become towns, that there is a widespread impact on urban records from changes
in landscape, which have to be considered before you can
back out what portion is due to increased GHG.

back a decade, particularly seems to show pressures within the Intergovernmental Panel on

in reality the situation is not quite so simple...»]
a) atmospheric CO2 from human activity is a major bause of observed
warming in the 1980's and 1990's, c) that
warming is overstated due to a number of factors including solar effects and measurement skew d) the data going
back 150 years is of little reliability because it is clustered so heavily
in northeast america and western europe rather than being global e) the global
climate has been significantly shifting over the last thousand years, over the last ten thousand years, and over the last hundred thousand years; atmospheric CO2 levels did not drive those changes, and some of them were rapid.

All of that, the

back as it is possible to accurately chart), adding or subtracting carbon was not relevant.
For instance,
back in the 1960s, simple
climate models predicted that global
warming caused by more carbon dioxide would lead to cooling
in the upper atmosphere (because the heat is getting trapped at the surface).
No matter how great natural gas's role
in reducing America's carbon emissions today, many environmental and
climate groups agree the fossil fuel will eventually need to take a
back seat to renewables to avoid catastrophic levels of global
warming.
