of art —
oil painting — is
back with a vengeance — in the form
of an
oil painting on a 80.000 square miles ocean
canvas with 32 million litres
of oil — a unique piece
of art... It has been 13 days since a BP
oil and gas exploration well blew out, setting fire to the drilling rig, which sank, killing 11 people.
His nudes, on the other hand, reveal echoes
of the past, as can be seen in the small series made in 1997 which comes
back to life in the rectangular outlines
of a
canvas and in the change
of technique to
oil painting.
In Untitled (Suite «Blancs»)(1973), Hantaï also engages both sides
of the
canvas, using the
back of an earlier
oil painting as his support; faint color patches from the original work are visible within the colorful pattern, fulfilling the artist's desire to «draw out the qualities
of the reverse.»
