New York's
education cartel has been set
back on its heels
by a new breed of
reformers, and the unions need someone to blame.
Given the strong union support for the Obama presidency, there was great speculation within
education circles throughout the fall as to whether the new president would turn out to be a
reformer — willing to challenge existing practices and the teachers unions in order to achieve dramatic changes in schools — or play it politically safe
by backing programs that brought only marginal changes.
However, some boards of
education are pushing
back on the over-generalized claims and mythical stories put forth
by education reformers regarding the efficacy of standardization and testing systems.
Parents need to start this revolution
by opting out their children from state testing programs in order to take
back public
education from the corporate
reformers who are destroying the
education of our children.
And teachers are firing
back saying, you know, these corporate
reformers, as they call them, are undermining public
education by pushing charter schools vouchers and trying to roll
back teacher tenure.
Torlakson was the teachers union candidate while Tuck was
backed by so - called
education reformers.
Incumbent board president Steve Zimmer,
backed by labor, is running against the
education reformer Nicholas Melvoin; in another district, labor -
backed Imelda Padilla is facing off against the charter -
backed Kelly Fitzpatrick - Gonez in an open race.

Despite the reluctance of school administrators to speak up and push
back against this ludicrous accountability exercise that has been promoted
by politicians and corporate
education reformers who have many self - interested reasons for maintaining this misguided testing endeavor, it is well - known that the «standardized» testing mandate only serves to continue the false narrative of failing American public
education in order to drive the profit - making agenda of those who seek to privatize
education and undermine the public trust.
In short, No Child is helping
reformers beat
back the racialist Poverty and Personal Responsibility myths held
by traditionalists (and even some of their reform allies) that is at the heart of the nation's
education crisis.
