In 2005 you saw Star Wars Galaxies (a premier
sandbox MMO mind you) implement a patch called New
Game Enhancements in order to copy WoW, killing itself in the process because LucasArts / SOE wanted so
badly to reach the market WoW had tapped.
If you are playing in that
sandbox, then you must be prepared to take the good and the
bad like any other AAA
game company and not use the indie developer excuse for any shortcomings.
Not the
worst thing in a
sandbox game, mind you.
Minecraft New 3DS Edition isn't a
bad game at all — at its core it's still the same brilliantly addictive creativity
sandbox.
The interactivity is clearly geared towards a younger audience, but that's no
bad thing, especially when combined with a variety of
game modes that run the gamut from accessible, open,
sandbox fun to hard as nails.
I'm not saying it's a
bad thing, AA is one of my favorite
games (with AC replacing it), but don't go in expecting a
sandbox experience.
One of the key features of
sandbox games is that they allow you to really create the fine details of your character — what he / she does, how good or
bad he / she is, and of course, what he / she wears.
Assassin's Creed II is one of the best
sandbox games I've ever played, which makes it that much more ironic that the original Assassin's Creed is probably one of the
worst.
