Scott McCartney, Travel Editor for The Wall Street Journal, delivers the
bad news that airlines are adding more
seats with less
pitch and less available options.
In Economy Class things could be
worse — the
seat width may be a tight 17 ″ but at least the
seat pitch is a slightly more palatable 32 ″.
It's
bad enough when passengers are expected to put up with 31 ″ of
seat pitch on transatlantic flights but to offer such little leg room on an ultra long - haul flight is shameful.
According to SeatGuru the Premium Economy cabin has
seats with a 37 ″
pitch and 18 ″ width — which isn't too
bad — but while the economy cabin has a
seat pitch of 31 ″ (bearable) the
seat width is a miserly 17 ″ which is horrible.
Assuming SeatGuru hasn't made a mistake it has one of the best
seat pitches (so it provides good leg room) but has one of the
worst seat widths at just 17.2 ″.
That's horrible... and the fact that the
seat pitch is just 31 ″ means that this is about as cramped as it gets from a legacy airline (it's not quite as
bad as Air Canada's Rouge subsidiary)
I was prepared for the
worst when I ventured beyond the curtain, but when I tried the premium economy
seat, I was impressed with the
seat legroom (34 inches
pitch).
