items, but I'm guessing they consisted of nothing more than a box from the local
bakery and a cup of plain old hot apple cider.
If you don't want to go that route, Suzette's Boulangerie & Patisserie, a
bakery serving artisanal breads and both savory and sweet products, is next door offering
items to go.
Not surprisingly, these largely synthetic fats — designed to stay solid at room temperature, as saturated fats
do, and typically used in fried foods and
bakery items — have been linked to ailments ranging from coronary heart disease to diabetes (SN: 11/10/01, p. 300).
Although some trans fats (of a slightly different chemical configuration)
do occur naturally in dairy and meat, the most dangerous trans fats are found primarily in packaged foods, some
bakery items and restaurant food (unless you live in a city or state that bans their use in restaurants).
All you have to
do as a traveller is head to
bakeries around closing time and ask if they'll be throwing any
items away.
