The
coat pattern is agouti (also called «ticked»), which has multiple
bands of color on each
hair.
With the richer reds and mahogany colors if individual
hairs are examined it can be seen that there are
bands of the various colors found in the
coat with the darkest, or black, on the tip.
Cavy colours are classed in 3 sections — Agouti (the
hair has several different
bands of colour), Self - coloured (solid colour) and cavies with markings (combinations of colours in marks on the
coat).
Dog
hair can be black or brown (liver), red or yellow, white, or agouti (the «wild color»
coat of Norwegian Elkhounds, some German Shepherds, etc. in which each
hair has
bands of different colors).
Other types of
coats or
banded hairs may have black further down on the shafts, red (tan) at the top, or some other combination or order.
