Today, we all sit at the
base of the genomic Tree
of Knowledge, facing questions — sometimes urgent ones —
of ethics, health,
science, and personal choice.
Most
science is built on layers
of knowledge that changes constantly when new knowldedge is discovered and really is
based on faith.
But theology isn't the end, it's the means; as with a hard
science in the laboratory, the purpose
of gathering
knowledge is to use it as a
basis for further work and increased understanding.
The most urgent immediate task, therefore, is the development
of education on the
basis of the
sciences, both natural and social, for only with their help can society as a whole be taught to construct a life completely in accordance with that
knowledge which has become the factor by which our age is distinguished from all preceding periods
of history.
The only reasonable answer I can come up with is that the bible was the word
of man — not god — and it was
based on legends, stories,
knowledge and
science as it existed about 2000 years ago.
To use your health analogy, if I decide I want to live a healthy lifestyle, but have no
knowledge of what healthy is or the history
of health
science, I could easily come to the conclusion that chocolate cake is very good for me and should be the
basis of my diet.

of science as we continue to improve on our

Based on the comments I received from my blog posts on the
science and religion debate, I want to point Evangel readers in the direction
of some resources that would inform the conversation because ---- with the exception
of a few interlocutors ---- pervasive ignorance and fear seem to prevail instead
of knowledge and faith.
If the body
of divinely revealed
knowledge contained in the Bible and guarded by the church was the
basis of the Christian era, so the body
of knowledge being accumulated by
science was seen to be the foundation
of modernity, fueling human confidence in an ever better future.
Again, in the life
sciences and in the social
sciences much
knowledge has been accumulated, but the function
of such
knowledge is not to extinguish the demand for research but rather to provide the
basis for vast new explorations into the questions suggested by such
knowledge.
Even with tots it's possible; they don't have to understand the complex
science behind it, but they can experiment to see if certain conditions change the sound
of an instrument, and they can make suggestions
based on their own experience and
knowledge.
