It seems to me that the current call for «social justice» is not so much related to any specific leftist policy as much as an appeal for
the basic values of democracy.

These, then, are the several levels
of unity that bind together the diverse topics
of the chapters to follow: first, the curriculum
of education; second, the major problems
of contemporary civilization; third, the
values by which education is seen as a moral enterprise; and fourth, a concept
of value as devotion to worth rather than to satisfaction
of desire, together with an ideal
of democracy as the social expression
of basic moral commitment.
But beyond that, my account
of basic democracy is intentionally bare - bones — and thus lacking the blood and tissue
of value commitments and passions that animate all fully realized political systems.
Some
of our
values are clear — internationalism, protecting individuality and non-conformity, hating bullying and the abuse
of power, promoting environmentalism, protecting civil liberties and a love
of democracy not so much because we think it efficient or effective but because it expresses a
basic equality
of respect for all individuals.
The
values of independence,
democracy, human rights, and sustainability help the organization work toward their vision
of a world where all people have access to enough affordable, healthy, and wholesome food and clean water to meet their
basic needs.
