At six metres high, the Wind Sculptures have a majestic presence, with brightly coloured, painted surfaces to replicate the
patterns of Dutch wax
batik fabrics.
Traditions of classical art and religious iconography are explored in the exhibition; Shonibare uses the
patterns of the
batik fabrics to interrupt these themes.
In these works, the materials and designs of the original clothing are replaced with
batik, a colorful and ornately
patterned fabric.
Adorning them with
patterns from African Dutch
batik fabric, Shonibare has designed his sculptures to evoke the billowing sails of trade ships, conjuring notions of cultural history and national and ethnic identities.
The organic concave and convex shapes are mirrored in the hand painted
