Most days I don't know which is harder for me to believe: that God reanimated the brain functions of a man three days dead, or that God can bring back to life all the beautiful things we have killed.

All of my other children had a beautiful and redemptive birth story: by contrast, Maggie's birth had been one of the most traumatic days of my life and I felt that it was my fault.

Among the highlights: getting to know my sisters - in - law better, participating in perhaps the best church service I've been to in years, indulging in Maki Evans» delicious cupcakes gourmet, enjoying an impromptu living room concert from the Beekeepers, seeing more wildlife in one week in New Jersey than I've seen in years in Tennessee (deer, rabbits, foxes, turkeys, etc.), watching Veggie Tales with my beautiful nephew Will, long morning walks with my mother - in - law, and a Mother's Day gathering that included half of the family (which is over fifteen people!).

Also, actively seeking out moments of quiet in my day — just a minute or two here and there, pausing maybe after you wash your hands in the bathroom, before starting up you car, etc - and taking a few deep breaths and thinking about how insignificant your problems truly are in the grand scheme of things, and how beautiful life is.

Ah, these rhubarb muffins were a beautiful mess — and a perfect example of my life these days.

There are a few components, but three of them (the poached pears, the butterscotch, and the dough) can be made ahead of time and store beautifully, so that when pie day rolls around, you will be prepared and calm and ready to make the most beautiful, bad - ass pie of your life.

Anyone who lives in the Northwest knows that when summer finally arrives, we NEED to go outdoors and take full advantage of our beautiful, long sunny days.
