mmm... a protagonist who complete dominates a long film to the detriment of context and the other players in the story (though the abolitionist, limping senator with the black lover does gets close to stealing the show, and
is rather more interesting than the hammily - acted Lincoln); Day - Lewis acts like he
's focused on getting an Oscar rather than bringing a
human being to life - Lincoln as portrayed
is a strangely zombie character, an intelligent, articulate zombie, but still a zombie; I greatly appreciate Spielberg
's attempt to deal with political process and I appreciate the lack of «action» but somehow the context
is missing and after seeing the film I know some more facts but very
little about what makes these politicians tick; and the lighting
is way too stylised,
beautiful but unremittingly unreal, so the film falls between the stools of docufiction and costume drama, with costume drama winning out; and the second subject of the film - slavery -
is almost complete absent (unlike Django Unchained) except as a verbal abstraction
Princess Raccoon — This bizarre
little pan-Asian film stars Favorite Actress © Zhang Ziyi, as, well, Princess of the Raccoons who falls in love, against natural law, with a
human, who
's on the run from his villainous father, the King of a neighboring Mountain, who
's trying to kill him because a magic mirror claimed that the son would one day become more
beautiful than the king.
Ones that stuck in my mind included Roman mosaics (floors of ancient villas have
been uncovered with barely a piece missing), the
beautiful Winged Victory bronze, (cast in the first century but only rediscovered in the 19th so well had the locals hidden it from the Hungarian Lombard invaders) and a mediaeval cross covered not just with hundreds of semi-precious stones but with
little cameos and miniature portraits too to give it a
human dimension as well as a religious one.
Being filter feeders, whale sharks pose
little danger to
humans, allowing divers to interact and play with these
beautiful creatures of the deep.
