These genomic maps are useful in part
because animal genomes can be compared to human genomes.

This is
because large chunks of our
genome perform similar functions across the
animal kingdom.
It represents only a small fraction of an
animal's
genome (the rest is nuclear DNA), and
because it is transmitted only from the mother, it reveals just the genetic history of females.
(Ill - fitting
because humans have been indirectly, and much less precisely, modifying plant and
animal genomes for thousands of years via selective breeding, and evolution has been doing it for as long as there has been life on Earth.)
In addition, more precise
genome editing may allay public fears, especially if the resulting plant or
animal is not considered transgenic
because no foreign genetic material is introduced.
Many scientists suspect that imprinting, in both
animals and plants, happens
because the paternal
genome promotes growth of the biggest possible offspring, while the maternal
genome promotes conservation of limited resources.
Because of the inherently lean nature of wild
animal tissues throughout most of the year (Figure 5) and the dominance of MUFAs and PUFAs, high dietary levels of SFAs on a year - round basis (Figure 6) could not have exerted adverse selective pressure on the hominin
genome before the development of agriculture.
(ref) The US government justified adding the dog and cat
genome not for us veterinarians and pet lovers; they did it
because humans, dogs and cats have more genetic diseases than any other
animal species and understanding and attempting to repair or prevent these genetic issues in dogs and cats could have applications in human medicine as well.
I've been working in that field, started in the field of addiction about 30 years ago, and in the last 30 years it's been just an amazing time to go through my education and become a psychologist, primarily
because of the cracking of the human
genome, and the functional MRI, I mean, things that we were theoretically trying to figure out 30 years ago we can actually pinpoint now, and it is just an amazing time to explore the human
animal.
