Many of the self - publishers I've encountered are doing so
because established publishing houses won't take a risk on them, or on their books.

There are hundreds of traditionally
published authors (authors with the Big Five and other well -
established, respected and recognized
publishing houses) who can not quit their day jobs
because 1) their advances were too meager and 2) their royalties too low and 3) non-compete clauses prevents them from «traditionally
publishing» any other work.
I think it would have worked the same if $ 0.99 never existed and $ 2 would have been the great thing for Indie writers to be discovered
because established authors from
publishing houses still sell their ebooks at over 5 times that price in most cases.
From your position it's interesting,
because you've already
established yourself for many years as an author working with traditional
houses, your route to self -
publishing means that you already have a name behind you.
