I've had books in the top 100 in both

format, and the feedback loop is much more powerful in
ebook in my experience (maybe
because of instant gratification, maybe
because of lower price, maybe something else).

eBooks and you can upload on there with NO
formatting whatsoever,
because it just takes your file and you get to choose the size
of it for your readers.
Retailers like Powells.com, Christianbook.com, etc. all lose a lot
of transactions
because of their
eBook sales are limited by file
format.
One
of the reasons I like to keep
formatting in my control is
because we often change our
ebooks over time.
Integrating new options into the way people discover, use, and contribute to the record
of scholarship can be exhausting, and someone who hears about a new novel may have trouble getting it
because it's not available through their library, their favorite bookstore can't carry it, it's in the wrong
ebook format, or it's only available to people living in a different geographic region, which seems insane since their Facebook friends who are raving about it have no trouble expressing themselves from a different continent.
Of the several
ebook formatting services I checked out, I chose
Ebooks By Design mainly
because their quote was so reasonable.
Let's first talk about Vellum
because eBook formatting has been really kind
of awful and I converted to Vellum back in October.
