Waititi does an
excellent job of balancing the sweet and humorous moments with the more poignant bits (like Bella's heartbreaking death scene), but what separates the
movie from the typical coming - of - age tale is the unique brand of humor that's
become synonymous with the director.
After an
excellent setup, the
movie becomes bogged down in chase scene after chase scene on its way to its inevitable ending.
BLAZING SADDLES was the latest in a long line of cowboy comedies (CARRY ON COWBOY and CALAMITY JANE being other
excellent examples), but not only did it send up the canon, it stepped out of the
movie, literally breaking the fourth wall, and
becomes a comedy about cinema, ALL THE WHILE tackling racism in a subversive, clever and, most importantly, funny way.
The subject matter certainly carries the danger of
becoming too melodramatic, but between the interesting premise and
excellent cast, «Flight» is exactly the kind of riveting character drama that should help remind audiences just how good Zemeckis»
movies used to be.
But to skip Creed on that basis is a mistake, for the rest of its two + hours are so great, so tautly filmed and featuring such honest, intelligent performances that it
becomes a genuinely
excellent movie that happens to be about boxing.
It's also a
movie unusually rich in
excellent supporting characters, including Chris Messina as Joe's punchy Florida sidekick Dion, Chris Cooper as the pragmatic, world - weary local police chief, and a translucent Elle Fanning as the chief's daughter Loretta, who drags herself out of heroin addiction to
become a beacon of proselytising Christian righteousness.
The Oliver Hirschbiegel film has since had to deal with
becoming something of a meme, but the actual
movie is
excellent and worthy of a watch if one has not seen it already.
It's worth seeing the film to watch Chan deliver a powerful and unique performance, truly doing an
excellent job channeling that darkness he has so often eschewed in other
movies, but «The Foreigner» never realizes that this role is its greatest strength and emotional core, and in doing so, ends up
becoming a muddled affair that isn't as engaging as it should be.
