Moreover, research has shown that materials which
become superconducting at relatively high temperatures have layered structures.
Thanks to quantum - mechanical effects, below a certain critical temperature some materials
become superconducting: electrons flow through them unhindered by the usual electrical resistance.
The team found that the final product (LaPt5As) was non-superconducting at a pressure of five gigapascals (GPa)(equivalent to 50,000 bars of pressure), but
became superconducting at 10 GPa, only to return to a non-superconductive state at 15 GPa.
BaFe2As2 is what is called a «nematic» crystal because its structure goes through a phase transition before
it becomes superconducting.
As the electron density outside the quantum point contact is increased, the material
becomes superconducting and the transmission of Cooper pairs — the particles that comprise a superconducting current — through the constriction was also studied in this work.
«The superconducting pair of electrons then leak into the topological insulator which also
becomes superconducting,» explains Thilo Bauch, Associate Professor in Quantum Device Physics.
The sensor also detected tiny magnetic vortices, which appear and disappear as the material
becomes superconducting and may be a key to understanding how these materials become superconducting at high temperatures.
