The overwhelming majority of nursing homes in Texas are professionally staffed and operated, but in some facilities, residents
become the victims of neglect or abuse.
We can't go back in time to protect animals before
they become victims of neglect and cruelty, but there is a next best thing.
If your loved one resides in nursing home care, there are steps you can take to help prevent them from
becoming the victim of neglect or abuse.

Boys who have been physically maltreated and
neglected as children, as well as those who have been
victims of physical or sexual assault, have been forced to have sexual contact against their will or have been
victims of incest are vastly more likely to
become fathers as teenagers than other teenage males (for review, see Kiselika, 2008, pp42 - 44)

But sadly, some nursing home residents
become victims of nursing home abuse and
neglect and suffer pain, emotional distress, lost quality
of life and premature death.
The people living in nursing homes and care homes are especially in danger
of becoming the
victims of elder abuse and
neglect.
Elderly and / or sick residents are particularly at risk for
becoming victims of nursing home abuse or
neglect because many
of them are too weak or not lucid enough to know that they are being abused.
Victims of previous abuse or
neglect are far more often identified as «problem children» than are their peers and show higher rates
of diagnosis with attention problems and violent and oppositional behaviors.27 Caregivers and teachers often respond to these behaviors in the traditional fashion: warnings
become more brusque (and often louder) and discipline more strict (and often more punitive).
These are just some
of the ways Alaska Children's Trust and our partners across the state are working together to prevent child abuse and
neglect, and help
victims heal and
become resilient.
Both operated emergency shelter facilities as a place to provide temporary shelter for children who were
victims or in danger
of becoming victims of abuse,
neglect, or other forms
of maltreatment.
