The China market has grown rapidly over the past couple of years and is now Australia's fourth largest
beef and largest sheepmeat
export market by
volume,
exporting 148,000 tonnes of
beef and 60,000 tonnes of sheepmeat to the market in 2015.
If the US opens its market to Brazilian
beef, that may create further pressure on Australian
export volumes, given the high price of Australian
beef.
According to Meat & Livestock Australia, the industry's peak body, the
volume of
beef exports to mainland China has fallen 14 per cent in the year to September 2017.

exports are forecast to increase by 4 per cent in the 2015 - 16 period to $ 9.2 billion before a four per cent decline in 2016 - 17 as
export volumes decline on the back of lower production.
