A year and a half ago, Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in
New York
began a program
of adult education, offering classes on topics as demanding and varied as «The Nature
of God the Father» and «Renaissance and Reformation: The Formation
of the Protestant
Tradition.»
If it gives us a sense that we come from nowhere, that our past is inchoate and our
tradition shallow, so that we
begin to doubt our own identity and some
of the sensitive among us flee to more ancient lands with more structured
traditions, it also gives us our openness to the future, our sense
of unbounded possibility, our willingness to start again in a
new place, a
new occupation, a
new ideology.

of the texts and
traditions of ancient Christianity to the point where organized Christianity, if it were to be guided by such work, would have to
begin to rethink some
of its basic theological commitments.
In an alliance with Christian conservatives against the atheism that has made a sick and paltry joke
of each
of their respective and joint
traditions and that has
begun like a swarm
of termites to eat away the underpinnings
of this democratic republic, the
new Jewish conservatives have come to understand that any alienation they felt as children in Christian America is as nothing compared with the danger they sense to themselves and their progeny, along with their uncomprehending coreligionists, in atheist America.
But if we look at the beliefs
of Jesus and the apostles as they are mirrored in the
New Testament, we find that they see themselves as standing not so much at the
beginning as at the culmination
of a
tradition of faith.
The great prophetic
tradition had gone so far in the apprehension
of God before Christianity
began that the first prerequisite for a true estimate
of the
New Testament is grateful appreciation
of the Old.
I
began to let go
of many things and embrace
new and came to the conclusion that Western Church and theology has misunderstood Jesus life and teachings altogether as IMO it can only be understood from a Eastern Spiritual
Tradition perspective.
