Competencies Defining what teacher candidates should know and be able to do can be challenging, particularly given the continually evolving understanding of what
teaching and learning should look like in the current education landscape.
This gives them experience with a process, known as
competency - based learning, that a growing number of primary and secondary schools where they'll eventually
teach are
beginning to adopt.
Both educators and the public are
beginning to better understand that success for our students, beyond high school and through college and careers, means that
teaching and learning must focus on more than just core academic content — and that students do not gain social and emotional
competencies at the expense of rigorous academics.
Portfolio development has received some attention as a possible tool for
beginning teacher reflection during their induction programs (Perez, Swain, & Hartsough, 1997) and has been mentioned as way to ensure
competency in
teaching (Reynolds, 1995).
The continuum
begins with elemental communication practices, continues through instructor - centered practices, and moves into student - centered work, where students were allowed to construct their own meaning of learning while demonstrating required
competencies for entry level
teaching.
While mentoring overall addresses the instructional support resident educators need as they
begin their professional
teaching careers, focused mentoring is specific and targeted to address teacher
competencies Ohio once measured in the Resident Educator Summative Assessment (RESA) in the years preceding 2017 - 2018.
