Pets accepted by HAS are never euthanized due to a lack
of space, however, each year we do have a few
cats and
dogs who develop terminal illnesses
or whose aggressive / unpredictable
behavior does not make them suitable candidates for adoption.

Accordingly, and because (unlike private shelters and SPCAs) animal control agencies generally accept all

cats that are brought to them and are required by law to keep them regardless
of their adoptability for a specified period
of time, crowding may force animal control agencies to euthanize adoptable animals
or ones with milder health
or behavior problems such as ear mites, kennel cough, skin lesions, excessive barking,
or destructive chewing, in order to free up space for more adoptable animals.

We see a variety
of behavior issues, such as
dog and
cat aggression, separation anxiety, house soiling, litter box issues, canine
or feline rivalry, and various fears, and phobias.
No one gets a new kitten
or puppy, rescues an older
dog from a shelter
or gives a home to a stray
cat planning to give their new pet up to a pound
or shelter because
of behavior conflicts.
If your
dog or cat's elimination
behavior changes soon after the addition
of a new medication there is a very good possibility that the drug is contributing to the diarrhea
or other symptoms.
I also recommend you take your
dog or cat to the vet for a wellness exam to insure the source
of the obsessive
behavior is indeed behavioral and not a physical condition, such as thyroid disease, which needs to be addressed.
After all, research shows that most
dogs and
cats are relinquished to animal shelters -
or otherwise given up - because
of common
behavior problems their families didn't know how to solve.
Whether this term is applied to the
behavior of a
dog,
cat, bird, fish,
or other animal, the notion is the same: enrichment is the provision
of items
or activities that improve the quality
of that animal's life.
The mission
of Pet
Behavior Aid, a non-profit organization, is to increase the retention
of companion animals in their homes in Asheville and Western NC through education and training programs for people who have
dogs or cats, animal shelter and rescue workers, and the general community.
