Jeremy, Thank you for going out on a limb and pushing the envelope when it comes to questioning what
you believe about the scripture and about God.
The believers saw Christ taken up into the sky, If you can't accept that, then you can pick and choose what you want to
believe about all scripture.
I think the question — comes down to more what is the fruit of life based on what
we believe about scripture and the way we interpret it.
I am not at all interested in telling you what to
believe about Scripture and theology.
No, I am not falling into some mystical religious explanation where I believe that the Bible has eternally existed in heaven or in the mind of God (though many Christians actually believe this), or that the Bible fell out of the sky on stone tablets or golden plates (like some other religions

about Jesus, but whether or not you
believe He is fully man and also fully God, there is more than enough proof historically and in present
scripture to show that labeling Him as a mysogonist and an advocate for murder is a drastically false account of who He is and what He stood for.

Now, here's where I suspect Challies and I may agree: Because we
believe Scripture to be authoritative in matters of faith and practice and a trustworthy testimony regarding Jesus Christ, we would be right to be highly suspicious of anyone whose claims
about their experiences with God run contrary to the teachings of
Scripture.
I didn't know what I

Like the Calvinist, the non-Calvinist also

Scripture's own witness is very clear
about the purpose of the written word - «these [signs] are written that you may
believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that befieving you may have life in his name» (John 20:3 i).
Regarding the eternal state of people who do not
believe in Jesus for eternal life, I do think there is some sort of eternal separation from God, though I am not sure

about all these things, that Jesus truly is able to offer us eternal life, and on and on it goes.
For example, a person could
believe that a higher power exists but remain skeptical that the people that wrote
scripture had any special knowledge

Sometimes people accuse me of cherry - picking verses from the Bible, but other times people say that we just have to accept what the Old Testament says
about God, even if we don't like it (Again, I
believe I am doing this, but I just have a way of reading
Scripture that differs from the way the proponents of a violent God read
Scripture).
If we are not confident
about the existence of God or what Jesus says in the Gospels, then how can we actually
believe anything
about God or

I
believe with all my heart that we all have listened to a preacher or professor and based our opionions / teachings on what «man» says
about scripture... and we forget
about prayer.
Theologians like to ask these sorts of questions
about Scripture, theology, and Jesus, but in the end, what it all comes down to is
believing what God has done for us in Jesus Christ, even if we do not understand all the details.

Without saying that it is particular religious acts or practices, such as prayer or the use of
Scripture for guidance, that make one's function pastoral, I
believe that a case can be made for an identifiable pastoral function as well as a pastoral way of thinking
about that function.
